Probing Civil Rights Cold Cases

The FBI and the Department of Justice Tuesday announced a new partnership with leading civil rights groups to investigate aging unsolved violent crimes from the Civil Rights era. "We will do everything we can to close this dark chapter in our nation's history," Director Robert S. Mueller said.
 

While the information can include potentially anything about the individual's employment, credit, or past history, the most common usage of background checks refers to criminal records.
