It was June 1964, the start of "Freedom Summer," an initiative to register southern blacks to vote and a response to the KKK's campaign of intimidation. On June 21, three activists disappeared, their burned station wagon presaging the worst. Our case was termed "MIBURN," for Mississippi Burning.
While the information can include potentially anything about the individual's employment, credit, or past history, the most common usage of background checks refers to criminal records.
